Has it indeed been over a month since my last post. Quite an eventful year this has been. Hopefully, 2020 will be a better year not only for publishing new posts, but for all aspects in general. In today's post, I will be going over Erick Erikson stages of development. You can draw a parallel with similar posts I have written in the past.
Erik Erikson was an German-American psychologist born in 1902. Best known for his "Stages of Psychosocial Development". His work was influenced by Sigmund Freud:
1. Trust vs Mistrust (Infancy - 1 and 2 years old) : At this stage, we are experiencing the world for the first time. Thus, it is hard to know if we can trust other people. We could have a positive experience with one person, and trust other people as a result. Conversely, we could have a negative one and be more cautious about whom we trust. Mother-child relationship is essential at this time.
2. Autonomy vs Shame & Doubt (Early childhood - 2 to 4 years of age) : During this stage, we start discovering our body and identity. If we are permitted to discover ourselves, we become confident. On the other hand, if we are not, we begin doubting ourselves and to feel insecure. Both parents need to be quite supportive at this time.
3. Initiative vs Guilt (Preschool age - 4 to 5 years of age) : During this period, we take initiative and experience new things. We also learn basic concepts. Such as how round objects roll. We wonder if it is fine to keep doing a new activity we tried for the first time. We will pursue our interests if we are encouraged by our parents. Nonetheless, if we are discouraged, we will stop doing what we enjoy.
4. Industry vs Inferiority (School age - 5 to 10 years old) : We learn that we are different from others and develop our own interests. We feel the need to prove our worth at school, etc. and seek recognition from our teachers, parents, and other people in our community. If we are motivated by our teachers for instance, we become more responsible. Being ignored or discouraged by them however, could make us feel less valuable than our peers.
5. Identity vs Role confusion (Adolescence - 13 to 19 years old) : We realize we have different social roles. We take the role of children, friends, students and citizens. This period is usually when an "identity crisis" takes place. Phrase coined by Erikson himself. It is important that parents allow their children to explore new things to certain extent and with limits that is. Be that as it may, if we completely shut down our children, they will feel lost, Hence, struggling to find an identity.
6. Intimacy vs Isolation (Early adulthood - 20 to 40 years of age) : When we reach young adulthood, we begin to understand what our place is in the world . We no longer have the need to fit in as much as we did before. Besides, we also have the desire to build strong relationships with friends and even romantic relationships. If we feel that we are failing at one or both, we start feeling isolated and left out. Having a close bond with our peers is crucial for the most part.
7. Generativity vs Stagnation (Adulthood - 40 to 65 years of age) : We are more comfortable from the start of this stage. We use our spare time intelligently and in some cases contribute to society. If we have been successful, we care for generativity (the need to inspire and lead next generations to brighter future). If we have not conversely, we become pessimistic and stagnant.
8. Ego integrity vs Despair (Maturity - 65 to death) : We look back at our lives. We assess how successful with have been and compare ourselves with others. If we believe we have had a fruitful life, we are nice to the people around us and have a positive attitude. If the opposite is the case, we become bad-tempered and are rude to others.
This has been one of my unusual articles where I explain a theory, concept and so on. Usually not following my regular layout. Even so, I consider this an enriching topic to close the year. Especially in the fields of education and psychology. Best wishes for 2020!

Have I already talked about English teaching theories and approaches. Nonetheless, this time around, I would like to share a common issue regarding TEFL (Teaching English as a foreign language). In the following post I will address why I believe it is essential for non-native English teachers to be as close to perfection as possible. As well as offering some advice for reaching a higher proficiency level.
It is indeed quite challenging to teach English in a country where the aforesaid language is not official. Most teachers in Peru and other South American countries for instance. They mainly focus on the academic side of English. They believe that the more degrees they possess, the better able they will be at delivering a lesson in EFL. Be that as it may, being fluent in the language you are aiming to teach is a must. Academic competence should go hand in hand with mastery of the target language.
According to a study done in 2014 by Education First (worldly recognized organization), Argentina is the Latin American country with the largest number of competent English speakers as a second language.
Even if you as an non-native English teacher have not had the opportunity to live overseas, there are a few recommendations you could follow: First of all, joining language exchange events is one of the most fun and enriching experiences you could ask for. I will share the link to some below this post. Interacting with different kinds of native speakers gives a wider perspective on how English is spoken in the real world. You could even befriend some of the attendees. Moreover, reading constantly in the target language (especially books and magazines that have a high enough register) and being exposed to the media should work in tandem. Especially auditory and visual media that is. Such as videos and movies, among others. As a last suggestion, I would add making an effort to visit an English speaking country and force yourself to use the language.
In sum, I would say that you should never be satisfied with the knowledge you have of a language which is not your own. Especially if you plan to teach it. As a wise man once said: "There are lots of t-shirts, but a few teachers". The aforementioned applies to all subjects. Even so, when it comes to teaching English, you should be able to sound as natural as possible. Bear in mind at all times that students will mimic your speech. Consequently, it is highly recommend to double-check the content you are going to cover for any given class beforehand. Case in point, even if you believe you know how to pronounce a word you have not encountered before. It is always better to make sure you do.

Have you ever thought of the idea of living forever? Or at least expand your life span to heights never seen before? Well, thanks to transhumanism this could all be possible. In the past decades, scientific breakthroughs have been made that point us in the right direction. In the following, I will expand on this fascinating topic to the best of my ability.
Cambridge Dictionary defines transhumanism as "the theory that science and technology can help human beings develop beyond what is physically and mentally possible at present time". Quite straight forward concept. Being able to upgrade ourselves to become physically stronger, smarter, and immune to most diseases seems like a unattainable dream for most. Is it however?
The first bionic limb was created back in 1993 in Edinburgh, UK by a team from Margaret Rose Hospital. A landmark in science history without a doubt. One which particularly aided a man with muscular cancer recover a movable arm. Be that is may, we have come a long way since then. Bio-engineering and surgery have made several more major improvements since then. Not to mention the aforesaid was but one of the countless examples we could find from science in our time.
What is more, going a step further, we could be able to upload our consciousness into a computer or online network. Thus, we could live endlessly. In 2002, scientist Kevin Warwick had 100 electrodes fired into his nervous system. Consequently, this allowed his nervous system to be linked with a computer. He could feel what a robot hand was feeling and even control it with his mind from a far away distance through the internet. Even though the aforementioned is a huge breakthrough, downloading our entire mind into a digital network would be a much more complicated endeavor. One that could take decades and perhaps a hundred years from now.
In summary, the possibilities for what transhumanism can accomplish are endless. Many believe that only the wealthy will have access to this technology. Albeit, as time goes on, it could be more accessible to different kinds of people. We could also argue that people not dying could be counter-productive since the world would be overpopulated and resources would run out. Contingency measures would have to be made in that respect. Singularity is another major issue that could arise. It basically means AI taking over the world. Only time will tell what happens. For now, all we can do is be patient and hope for the best.

Despite the fact that I try to keep posting at least once a month, it is not always an easy task. Oftentimes inspiration takes longer to reappear as it used to before. Not to mention that to find the right time and topic to address are of utmost importance. Today I have chosen to talk about how to reset your life. Something that people need to do from time to time so as to reinvent themselves and start anew.
There is no such thing as a reset button. I have already touched on that before. Notwithstanding, you do not necessarily need to go back to the start. Through trial and error you grow in many different ways. Thus, you can adapt and make some changes throughout your journey. The most successful people on Earth are the ones who despite having failed 100 times, kept on trying new methods.
For instance, I decided to take some time off from my routine recently. That alone has helped me no end in ways I did not think possible. Have I made quite a few discoveries and devise new plans for the future. None of that would have been a reality had I not taken a well-deserved break.
There is such thing as an outlier. Someone or something that does not fit the norm when it comes to statistics. A person who makes it to a 100 years old would be called a genetic outlier. Well, who says you cannot be one yourself? It does not have to be about age. It could be about anything that comes to mind. Someone who achieves something people have never managed to do before would be called an outlier as well. Be that as it may, reaching success is not going to happen if you are not fully committed and passionate about what you do. Probably you are not at the right place if you feel stuck at your job, relationship, or whatever is holding you back. More often than not. rethinking your strategy is the best way to reinvent yourself.
In summary, there are always going to be times where you feel like there is no hope. Traumatic events such as the loss of a loved one can hit you so hard. Even so, dwelling on the past is not going to help you find peace and clarity. Having some time by yourself can help you find the answers you need. However, spending time on your own does not mean being in your room crying all day long. Instead, it means going out and looking for something you enjoy doing. That way, everything will start falling into place. You will be able to build yourself up progressively and become an even better version of yourself that you were before.

It has indeed been over a month since my last post. Needless to say that I encountered some unforeseen setbacks during this time. Even though it may take me slightly longer than anticipated to resume my usual activities and find new paths so as inspire and improve myself, it will all fall into place in due time. The topic for today is one that I have touched on in the past. With a twist and additional pieces of advice that is. How to memorize content for a test has never been as important as it is in today's world, where technology has made us lazier and less able to search for information properly.
On our daily lives, there are actions we do we do not seem to recall later on. Of course, it would be virtually impossible to remember every single thing we have done throughout our entire lives thus far. Thus, the reason why memories are divided into two kinds. Implicit and explicit memories: Implicit memories are those related with minor and mundane everyday activities. Such as washing your hands or taking out the trash. We mostly do these unconsciously. On the other hand, we have explicit memories. These are actions we consciously remember. Case in point, studying for a test, applying for a job, among others. We make an effort to remember the aforesaid. Since they have a significant impact in our lives.
When it comes to memorizing academic content, many people used to believe that reading silently was the most effective way. Be that as it may, recent studies have proved otherwise. Vocal production. In other words, saying things outloud in fact delivers better results. It seems as though the fact that you are more actively aware of what you are reading makes you better able to remember. This also works for when you are following a recipe, learning to drive or doing anything that deals with steps. Another study technique that has stood the test of time is note-taking without a doubt. Even though it may be hard to follow a professor going through slides, it is worth it in the end. The process of trying to grasp the main points of a lecture and erasing unnecessary words is what helps you recall information. This has been backed up by studies as well. Moreover, contextual cues can also be used to retrieve useful information. As an illustration, imagine you are studying for a presentation at home. You decide to take a short break and eat fruit while in the middle of your session. Well, that break you took not only helped you rest and find more motivation to keep going. Your brain actually paired the fruit you were eating with the part of the presentation where you left off. Hence, giving you the extra boost you needed to perform well in class. Finally, most people believe that alternating between subjects on different days while studying will provide you the best outcome. Even so, swiching between subjects during the same day is not a bad idea whatsoever. This technique is called the spacing effect. Taking short breaks and moving to different topics aids the brain to internalize the information in a more efficient manner.
In review, there are countless techiques you can use to maximize your learing. The ones listed above are but a few of the most well-known ones. Notwithstanding, I myself would add audio-recording the most crucial parts of the lecture. Since this also helps while running through your notes. Other than that, I would add yet one more of the techiques explained in the video. Memory games such as sudoku and puzzles serve as mental warm-ups. Consequently, sharpening your memory and enhancing your focus.

Even though it has not been that long since my last post, I felt compelled to write about happiness. An interesting yet elusive term for some. However, more so about the social aspect of it than the feeling per-se. In the following, not only will I explain what happiness means in my own words, but provide some insight on how having people we can trust around us, can in fact make our journey to happiness more attainable.
Most dictionaries will tell you that happiness is: "The state of being happy", which does not help us whatsoever in finding its true meaning. To many, being happy has to do with being wealthy and successful. For some other people happiness is tied to staying out of trouble. We all have our own definition of happiness. Nonetheless, if there is something all of us can agree on regarding happiness, it is friendships. Being lonely will certainly not aid you in your quest for happiness. Thus, the need for us to have people in our lives besides our family we can rely upon. Case in point, when we encounter a problem in our lives, more often than not, we seek the advice of a friend over that of a family member. Of course it is a two-way street so to speak. If we expect assistance from our friends in tough situations, we also have to be there for them when they need us.
Moreover, in the video I will share as well as this post, the speaker mentions how help can be exponential. To illustrate my point, let me give you an example. When you assist someone in need and provide them with an opportunity to improve themselves, the result will be more than promising. If there is anything you can do to help a younger person. Especially in your line of work, do not hesitate in giving a hand. That disciple you take on may even continue your good work and duplicate your action by helping someone who is also in a bad situation in the future.
There is not a road map that will take you straight to happiness. Nor is there an instruction manual on how to attain bliss. Be that as it may, most of us have experienced being happy to a certain extent. Even if it has not been for very long. For instance, reading your favorite book or eating your favorite meal can bring you some happiness. Doing what we enjoy can lead us to happiness. Regardless of how hard life may seem at times. Having a few joyful moments is in fact better than feeling sorry for the things we yet do not have. What is more, we can focus on what we can do while working towards our long-term goals. Hence, once we reach them, we will too be able enjoy other satisfying experiences. Due to us naturally having the means to provide ourselves with those opportunities by that point.
Lastly, I would reiterate my previews statement on: "How by cherishing our good moments, we can even motivate ourselves to pursue our long-term goals". The aforesaid is essential to success. Despite some people saying that success does not equal happiness, I beg to differ. It may not bring joy by itself, but it will definitely lead you there.

It has indeed been about a month since the last time I posted. Not much has changed other than my tendency to catch either a cold or a flu at the worst possible time. Even though this does not always happen, when it does it tends frustrate me to a very high degree. In the following however, will I not be talking about a physical condition. The topic I have chosen for today has more to do with mental health. Which is just as important as physical health. Have you ever heard about adjustment disorder? Well, if you have not, I encourage you to read this post until the end.
They say stress can be positive as long as it does not start affecting our health. The webpage "Science Direct" defines a stressor as a "perturbation in the system or the environment that threatens to disrupt an organism's normal functioning". For instance, for some people such as myself, constant noise can be a stressor. Even though we have described what the factors that cause stress are, we have not defined the word "stress" itself. "In the medical or biological context, stress is a physical, mental or biological disturbance that triggers a bodily or mental tension. Stress can be external (from the environment) or internal (from an illness or medical procedure). The aforesaid can also initiate "the fight or flight" response. A complex reaction to a threat. The state of being in such adverse circumstance is called stress as well.
What is more, let us now focus more on what an adjustment disorder is. In simple terms, it is an abnormal reaction to stress. It is usually caused by a distressing event. Such as the loss of a loved one, being a victim of crime, being fired from your job, etc. The symptoms usually start whithin three months of the event and rarely last longer than six months. Adjustment disorder is often mistaken with clinical depression due to sharing some of its symptoms. Consequently, the reason why it is sometimes referred to as "situational depression". Albeit, it is a much less serious condition. Among the most common symptoms we have: Trouble with sleep, work, study, among others. In 2013, its name was changed by the Mental Health Diagnostic System to "stress response system".
In summary, I would say that is in fact crucial to address any mental condition we may have developed due to adverse situations. Some believe that only physical health is important. Notwithstand, the aforementioned could not be further from the truth. Our reaction to strees could vary. Even so, when it leads us to become unable to cope with simple daily tasks, we should start worrying. Seeking profession professional help is the wisest decision you can make if you feel your current situation is getting out of hand.

Although still early to write a monthly post, did I want to take advantage of this particular time to pay homage to Shakespeare. The English language day happens to be on April 23rd. Be that as it may, I might encounter some unforeseen events at school. Owing to a new semester starting on Monday. Thus, the reason why I decided to write an early post about this behemoth of a writer.
Born in Stratford-upon-Avon, England in 1564, William Shakespeare was a highly regarded writer, playwright and actor. His family was relatively prosperous. As a young child Shakespeare was sent to a prestigious grammar school where he was educated. What is more, there is no evidence to support he attended university. When he turned 18 he got married to Anne Hathaway. On account of her being pregnant. They had two children. Judith and Hammeth. The latter whom passed away at the age of 11. He established himself in London in 1585. It is believed he spent most of the time after his marriage there. He started writing and acting in his plays. Moreover, thanks to some well-timed investments early in his career, he was able to secure his financial background and that of his family. Hence, he found more freedom to do the aforesaid activities he loved the most.
Regarding Shakespeare's work, by the early XVII Century he had begun writing plays on the tragedy genre. Case in point, Hamlet, Othello and King Lear. Which became highly popular worldwide later on. Throughout his entire life, he wrote 38 plays and 154 sonnets. Not to mention, that he immortalized phrases such as: "Love is blind"(The Merchant of Venice), "Seen better days" (As you like it), "Green Eyed Monster" (Othello), among others. Furthermore, his contributions to the English language were outstanding. He coined about 1700 words out of the 25000 word-long English vocabulary. In fact, some of the words and phrases we use today were first used by Shakespeare himself. Mostly on his published work. Latin was one of the languages that influenced the words he coined into English.
In summary, Shakespeare was a literary genius who inspired generations with his well-written plots and his highly developed characters. He enriched the English language and made it more unique than many others. Playwrights and writers even today take inspiration from him so as to produce better quality publications. For instance, 1994's Lion King was highly influenced by the masterpiece Hamlet (1599). The reasons of his death are not exactly known. It is assumed he met his end due to a "typhus" ( the new fever) outbreak in 1616 during a social gathering. (Aged 52).

The XXI Centery has brought countless breakthroughs in technology. Some of which come from the field of bionics. Which has made possible for people with physical disabilities to perform tasks they believed to be impossible up until not long ago. In the following post, am I going to expand on my views on the aforesaid field and break down the basics.
Bionics is, in simple terms, biologically inspired engineering. In other words, the development of highly advanced pieces of technology to be integrated with different parts of the human body. This also includes the replacement of organs. Moreover, bionic implants differ from standard prostheses by mimicking the original function closely. Thus, the reason why they surpass the traditional ones in almost every single aspect. Not to metion that in order to mimick organic limbs, bionic limbs are capable of receiving commands from the nervous system itself. Case in point, the creation of a bionic arm in 2016 by Dr. Meyer. From Chemnitz University of Technology in Germany. It was named "The iLimb". The built-in pressure sensors it possesses allows it to detect the shape of held objects. Needless to say, its grip technology allows it to perform everyday tasks such as tying your shoelaces.
Be that as it may, the aforementioned bionic limb was improved upon even by Dr. Ortiz-Catalan from Sweden's Chalmers University. He made "osseointegrated" bionic arms. Which are directly connected into the bones, nerves and muscle tissue. Ultimetaly providing more control and flexibility to users.
Notwithstanding, bionic limbs are not the only technology that has been able to be developed by scientists. In 2012 Dr. Ashworth became the first person in Australia to receive a bionic eye implant. Even though the implants had to be removed later on due to it still being at a testing stage, Dr. Ashworth received a tremendous joy from the experience. They were developed by "Bionic Vision Australia", and installed at The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital in Melbourne. During the operation a silicon chip was attached to the back of the patient's eye. The chip was connected by wires to the side of the patient's head. Another impressive case without a doubt is the creation of a mind-control exoskeleton by the Walk Again Project. It was first used by a 29 year old paraplegic Brazilian man. Julio Pinto. He was invited to the 2014 Soccer World Cup in Brazil to kick off the first game. A breakthrough which undoubtedly transcended disability by far.
In summary, there are several other cases which have inspired many people. Apart from providing scientists with the tools to keep innovating. Hence, making the lives of more patients with disability progressively better. 3D printing technology has been one of the means through which medicine and engineering experts have been able to replicate some organs for instance. The possibilities of improvement are endless. To illustrate my point, let me briefly explain what MIT Professor Hugh Herr was able to do. He designed and created bionic legs which had a high level of functionality and were capable of attenuating the shock of a limb hitting the ground, among others. Such as allowing him to even run, jump and climb. We are only scratching the surface.

Due to giving my undivided attention to more pressing matters, had I not been able to find the right time to write post. Nonetheless, there is a topic I have been pondering over for the past few days. Even though I may have touched on it a while back, I felt the need to revisit it and elucidate on it slightly more. Today, I will address psychoanalisis and how it aided Sigmund Freud in understanding human behavior in a more effective manner.
To begin with, it would be of utmost importance to mention the main contributions to better comprehending the human psyche. So as to understand human unhappiness, Freud proposed that we were all driven by the "pleasure principle". Which usually leads us to easy physical and emotional rewards. Thus, if not tackled properly, it could make a person be unstable and lean towards faulty decision-making. Despite the fact that our frontal cortex prevents our primal instincts from taking over, an individual's upbringing and way of life ultimately make the difference. Consequently, the need for us to adjust to the "reality principle". In other words, the opposite of what was explained above. In fact, there are three parts of our mind which are constantly in conflict: The ID, driven by the pleasure principle. The superego, which is a desire to follow the rules. Lastly, the ego, which has to accommodate between the other two. For instance, a couple goes to a fast food restaurant and orders two meals. The cashier only charges them for one and fails to notice it. The couple knowing about this mistake could have left on the spot. Be that as it may, they decide to point out the mistake to the cashier and offer to pay for the other meal as well. The superego preventing the ego from getting away without doing what is right, and the ego making sure everything is in order.
What is more, we have got different phases throughout a person's physical development which affect their psyche. The first one being the oral phase. During this period in early childhood, we deal with different feelings of eating and digestion. If not trained properly during this time, a child may take pleasure in refusing some types of food. They could also seek food to calm themselves down. Besides, there is the anal phase, closely aligned to which is now called "potty training". During this period, our parents mostly tell us what to do or where to go. We also test the limits of authority during this time. If discipline is not encouraged to the right amount and taught properly, a child could become rebellious and misbehaving later on in life. Moreover, we have got the phallic phase which continues until the age of 6. During this period, children start developing sexual feelings. Hence, they direct their sexual impulses towards their parents. The most immediately available people. At this stage is where Freud proposed The Oedipus Complex on the one hand, where a male child is unconsciously predisposed towards being in love with his mother and hating his father. On the other hand, he put forth The Electra Complex, which is applied to a girl being in love with her father and hating her mother. Through a proper upbringing nonetheless, children can learn that there are limits to a parent's love and that there are certain things they are not allowed to do. These two propositions may tie into a child's concept of love later in life.
Finally, the ones listed above are but a few of the main concepts proposed by Dr. Freud. He also goes into "parapraxis" or slips of tongue, among others. His main contribution to psychology being psychoanalisis. A clinical method for treating mental disorders through the dialogue between a patient and a psychoanalist. In them the therapist mainly goes through the patient's dreams or "wish filfulments", the already mentioned "slips of tongue", and even the kind of jokes they make. As a result, being able to provide a more effective treatment for the patient.

Even though I was not supposed to post anything until later this month, I encountered such an interesting article on "The Guarding" that I could not resist. We all know leukaemia is one of the most dangerous and invasive types of cancer. Affecting mainly children. Thus, the reason why Professor Greaves from The Institute of Cancer Research in London developed a method to counter leukaemia and may be on the verge to putting it into practice.
Professor Greaves has been studying leukaemia in children for about 30 years. Throughout all this time he has tried to solve the puzzle as to why children are more prone to acquiring it. The answer may come as a surprise to you. Since it is in fact much more simple than you can imagine. Despite 90% of cases being cured in the UK, the treatment is highly painful and toxic. Not to mention it can bring on long-term side-effects. Ironically however, most cases of leukaemia are a feature of developed nations and not of developing ones. As a matter of fact, "leukaemia is caused by a sequence of bioligal events". The trigger being a genetic mutation due to an accident in the womb. Regardless of it not being inherited, it leaves the child at risk of acquiring the disease later in life.
Be that as it may, for full leukaemia to take place, another biological event must occur. It entails the immune system. What is more, "for an immune system to function properly, it needs needs to be confronted by an infection the first year of life." According to Greaves, without that confrontation, the system is left unprimed. Hence, it will be unable to work properly. Why does this happen nonetheless? Well, 21st century parents are actually overdoing household cleaning it may seem. Case in point, the unnecessary use antibacterial soaps, antiseptic wipes, among others. Which in fact weakens the immune system of younglings. Not to mention that less breast feeding and lack of social interaction with other children is debilitating it as well. Consequently, Greaves and his team are working on a way to restore the amount of microbes that a healthy human gut should have. Given that in 1st world nations, people tend to have far less bacterial species in their guts. The solution might come in the form of a yogurt-like drink.
Finally, it would be more than helpful to add some background knowledge on what happens when a person develops leukaemia. Blood cells are made in bone marrow. We have red blood cells, which carry oxygen around our bodies. On other hand, we also have white blood cells which fight infection. Lastly, we have platelets which stop bleeding and are created whenever a person is hurt. Notwithstanding, when a person develops leukaemia, too many white blood cells are produced. The aforesaid stops the normal cells in your bone marrow from growing. As a result, your health suffers owing to a reduction of the cells listed above.
